Largest Ever Magnesium Alloy Automotive Die-casting Components Are Prototyped
The engineering research center for magnesium alloys at Chongqing University recently achieved an impressive accomplishment by prototyping the world's largest magnesium alloy automotive die-casting components. The component prototypes included integrated body castings and battery box covers to be used in new energy vehicles. Both components have an area exceeding 2.2 square meters making them the largest magnesium alloy automotive die-casting products in the world. This achievement is considered a major advancement in the production of lightweight materials for the automotive sector. Magnesium alloys are some of the lightest structural materials available, being 32% lighter than aluminum alloys while having two thirds of their density. Aside from being excellent structural materials, magnesium alloys also have great potential for energy storage. Demand for lightweight materials for both traditional and electric vehicles has risen significantly in the past few years and this breakthrough could represent a solution that is able to meet that demand.
